 In the Philippines, it’s not always easy to get a great smartphone at a 
low price. We’re hoping to help change that by working with leading 
partners Cherry Mobile and MyPhone to bring <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">Android One</a> smartphones to the Philippines.
 
These phones — the Cherry One and MyPhone Uno — will go on sale in the 
coming weeks, offering affordable phones with the latest version of 
Android (Lollipop), the fastest, most responsive Android experience 
ever. Lollipop includes a battery saver feature, Google’s new material design 
look and feel and quick settings to conserve data. And these phones have
 great hardware features, including front- and rear-facing cameras, dual
 SIM slots and a microSD card slot for additional storage.
 
To help people in the Philippines save money on data, these phones will also include features such as Chrome browser data compression and YouTube Offline.
 And with the launch, our connectivity partners will be offering 
promotional plans to people who buy Android One’s that will help reduce 
costs for over-the-air (OTA) updates and app downloads from Google Play.
 
The Philippines is the sixth country to get Android One, but don’t worry, there are more on the way — stay tuned!

 MANILA – A bill has been filed at the House of Representatives 
seeking to prohibit all computer shop owners from admitting minors into 
their establishments within school hours. 

In a statement released on Sunday, Valenzuela City first district 
representative Win Gatchalian said House Bill No. 4740, to be known as 
the “Internet Cafe Regulation Act," will limit children’s access to 
computers and other gadgets to prevent addiction and untoward incidents 
on popular games, such as DOTA and Counter-Strike. 

"High-stakes matches involving gambling among gamers, who are usually
 minors, tend to result in violence when one party becomes dissatisfied 
with the result of the match,” he said. 

In the initial deliberation of HB 4740, Gatchalian said parents also 
have an important role in monitoring the computer games and websites 
their children access. 

“Dapat din bantayan ng mga magulang kung appropriate ba sa age ng mga
 anak nila ang games at websites na nilalaro o binibisita ng mga bata,” 
Gatchalian said. 

Due to too much computer exposure, Gatchalian said the risk of 
addiction to game and other unwanted sites among children increases. 

“On one hand, Internet has allowed people to research and conduct work without having to invest so much on time,” he said. 

"However, we also need to recognize that computers bring 
entertainment through games, and children have the tendency to be easily
 addicted to these games as they have impressionable minds that games

 Devices running Android Lollipop is less likely to crash as compared to devices running the Apple iOS 8, according to data released by Crittercism. Crittercism provides mobile application performance management for enterprises to optimize their mobile businesses. It supplies up-to-date metrics of various operating system including iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, Hybrid and HTML apps. Android 5.0 Lollipop crash rates is lower at 0.2 percent as compared with Apple iOS 8 with 2.2 percent crash rate, Crittercism said in its report. The iOS 8 also has higher crash rate at 2.2 percent as compared with the iOS 7 at 1.9 percent crash rate. When compared to earlier releases, the Lollipop still has lower crash rate at 2.0 percent. KitKat and Ice Cream Sandwich has 2.6 percent crash rate respectively. The Apple iOS 8 was released in September 2014 but it comes with some bugs that frustrated those who downloaded the operating system. Version 8.0.1 unfortunately had more bugs that prompted Apple to pull it and release 8.0.2 straight away. Apple released iOS 8.1.1 in October and iOS 8.1.2 in December. The 8.1.1 enhanced performance for the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2 while 8.1.2 provided bug fixes. Adoption rate for the iOS 8 had finally picked up to 72 percent with the release of iOS 8.1.3 that provided the much needed bugs fix. The version also addressed the demands for storage space on devices. The adoption rate for iOS 8 increased from the 68 percent rate seen in December according to CNET. On Feb 11, Motorola expanded the Android 5.0 Lollipop for Moto Maxx and Moto E. Lollipop was soak tested with Moto Maxx in Brazil and Mexico and with Moto E in Brazil and India, the company said in its announcement. Android Lollipop will first roll out with Moto Maxx and Moto E smartphones available at retail stores. “As we normally do, we’re starting by rolling out the upgrade to smaller test groups, and if the results are strong, we will expand the software to more phones,” Motorola said in a statement.  What’s the first thought that runs through your mind when you read 
the word “popup”? If you’re the outdoorsy type, you might think of a 
camper. If you’re a junk food connoisseur, then maybe you think toaster 
pastry. Most people’s thoughts will travel right to their computer and 
visions (or maybe nightmares) of “buy this”, “go here“or “you’re the 
millionth visitor” show up instead. It’s bad enough to have to sit 
through more and more commercials during your favorite flick. Now they 
fly out at you on the net too? 

Just when the experience becomes unbearable, you get introduced to a 
browser extension… a mystical ad blocking wonder. A tool to help restore
 your serenity while surfing the net after a hard days stress. You can 
hit up your circle of trust on social media without feeling watched or 
being goaded by hints of items you may have glanced upon during your 
lunchtime tirade of crushing candies! You can’t even read your local 
news without having to cancel out ads for male enhancement products or 
some sort of wipes. It’s funny how the simple things can make you feel 
like a second grader on a snow day. 

Life now moves with more fluidity thanks to things like ad-block 
plus. For those that have never heard of it, ad-block plus or ABP can 
block pop ups, pop undersvideo ads and a few other things while 
navigating, socializing on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and even while locking your gaze on 
YouTube. (No, this is not an infomercial for adblock). ABP was created 
by Wladimir Palant as a hobby in 2006 and has been funded by Eyeo as 
“open source” since 2011. ABP has had over 300 million downloads, 50 
million active monthly users and is considered the most popular browser 
extension for blocking ads that exists. It’s easy to use, YOU tell it 
what to block and it’s absolutely free. With all of that laid out before you, it appears that ABP is definitely 
an A+ achievement. Of course, inevitably, someone is going to whine 
“it’s not fair”. It’s happening as you read this. The Titans of the 
internet; Google, Amazon and Microsoft among others are not happy with 
this at all. It’s like King Kong, Godzilla and the Kraken are all lined 
up throwing temper tantrums and crying because they can’t get the 
attention they desperately want and it’s not fair because they didn’t do
 nothing wrong. It brings in the memory of a little boy holding his 
breath to get what he wants. 
Enter the “white list” into the realm.  ABP does understand that some
 companies (especially the smaller ones) absolutely depend on their 
ability to advertise on the web in order to survive. As long as these 
companies adhere to strict criteria they can apply to be added to the 
exception list. Now, just because an entity’s ad is accepted doesn’t 
mean the end user cannot block them. You control the final settings on 
your machine. 

The Titans, on the other hand, are being told they need to pay if 
they want to be “white listed”. Perhaps the opinion is that they don’t 
need to pop up at people to survive. The only light seen through the 
keyhole here is simply… money. The big companies are being told they 
need to fork over 30% of the revenue they predict they would lose 
without the advertising. In other words, if Amazon claims they would 
lose 10 million dollars from blocked ads, they would need to pay ABP 3 
million to “unblock” them. 7 Million dollars is better than nothing, 
right? Well, depending how often it would have to be paid. Yearly?  
Monthly? Quarterly? Those details aren’t available yet. 

The final questions come from the same keyhole of above. Is this Eyeo
 attempting to teach the giants a lesson (by going after them where it 
hurts)? Maybe this is the work of the Titans thinking all they need to 
do is whip out their checkbooks to buy their freedom or is it simply 
Eyeo’s way to cash in on Mr. Palant’s original “hobby”?  What’s your

Ubuntu Phones

It's been a long road, spanning more than two years of adversity, but Ubuntu finally has a smartphone to call home. It's called the Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition and is built by Spanish company BQ. This little-known manufacturer of tablets and e-readers is adapting one of its Android handsets to run Ubuntu and selling it for €169.90 (just over $190) in a series of flash sales across Europe. It's an unusual way to release a phone: followers of the @ubuntu and @bqreaders Twitter accounts will be the first to be alerted any time the Aquaris E4.5 UE becomes available to buy. The modest price is matched by this first Ubuntu phone's barebone spec sheet. The 4.5-inch display has only qHD resolution (540 x 960), the processor is a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek chip, there's no LTE option, and the onboard storage is limited to 8GB. To offset these restrictions, the Aquaris allows memory expansion via a microSD card and also has two micro-SIM slots for added flexibility. If there's one spec indulgence here, it's the 5-megapixel front-facing camera, which BQ highlights as a major feature on the Android variant of this phone.

Though obviously aimed at the budget-conscious phone buyer, the Ubuntu phone faces tough competition from cheaper alternatives like the excellent Moto E on Android and Microsoft's latest Lumia devices running Windows Phone. Canonical, the company in charge of Ubuntu, believes it has a unique proposition to offer with its concept of Scopes. It eschews the traditional app-based interaction model in favor of "a new UI paradigm, designed to deliver content and services directly to categorised home screens, giving users a rich, unfragmented experience." This sort of content aggregation — serving web videos from YouTube and Vimeo as well as your own recorded media on the same screen — has been tried previously and never really succeeded. Canonical is therefore embarking on a highly ambitious project, but that's to be expected from the company that once sought $32 million to build the Ubuntu Edge smartphone that never materialized.

At the outset, The Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition will feature Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Time Out, Yelp, and Cut the Rope among its best-known partners, with Spotify, SoundCloud, and Grooveshark also being integrated via their web APIs. The Ubuntu phone "supports mainstream HTML5 beautifully," says Canonical, and the company's categorical that it's "not coming out with yet another iOS or Android clone." What you'll get is something altogether different, a fresh experience built around screen-edge interactions and tailored Scopes that aim at "reversing the hackneyed status quo." It's a bold set of promises, though it's likely to find a receptive audience in its first buyers, who will necessarily be Ubuntu fans already. 
 There will be no retail availability of the Aquaris. It will be on sale via sporadic flash sales over the coming weeks, recruiting early adopters and trying to build up into a viable mobile platform. The climb toward that goal looks as long and hazardous as Ubuntu's mobile struggles to this point, but today marks an important milestone along the way.

 The usually-reliable SamMobile website has published a new shot of Samsung’s eagerly awaited Galaxy S6 smartphone. And, as you can see, the rendering looks a lot like the design of the iPhone 6. Keep in mind that this render shows the shape of the device; the build might be metal, which would make it look even more like Apple’s new phones. The S6 is expected to make its official debut at Mobile World Conference in Barcelona at the beginning of March. The leaked photo comes from a tweet by someone named “Antonio Monaco” dated Saturday. SamMobile thinks the leak is legit: “There have been several leaks and rumors in the past, shedding the lights on its hardware as well as software, but we think that this might be our first real look at the upcoming Galaxy S6′s original design.” The home button at the bottom of the phone appears to be more raised from the surface of the phone than the Galaxy S5’s home button. The headphone jack moves to the bottom of the phone — exactly where the iPhone 6’s sits. “. . . the microUSB port are at the bottom, while the proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and the front-facing camera seems to moved from the right hand side of the earpiece to the left hand side,” SamMobile notes. The volume buttons show up on the left side of the phone. They are two separate buttons instead of one large volume rocker button — again, just like the iPhone 6. Some Samsung fans might wonder why the biggest smartphone maker in the world would mimic the design of Apple’s phones.  As rumored, <a href="http://adf.ly/wWLUF" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Microsoft</a> will be introducing a new default web browser as part of Windows 10 — and it's not Internet Explorer. The new browser, dubbed Project Spartan for now, represents a new era for Microsoft and its web browsing efforts. Project Spartan isn't so much of a completely new take on the web browser as much as it is a way to rebrand Microsoft's browser efforts. Internet Explorer 11 is a good web browser, but its market share has fallen over the years on the desktop and its presence in mobile is virtually nonexistent. That's in part because of the legacy baggage carried by the Internet Explorer brand. No matter how good Internet Explorer has become, for many users, speaking of IE conjures up images of IE 6 or IE 7. No one wants to go back to that era of browsing. So rather than try to convince the world that IE is still awesome, Microsoft has decided to introduce a new browser. Based on a new rendering engine, Project Spartan offers a more clean user experience, a more streamlined appearance and is designed for mobile, tablets and the desktop. Other features of Project Spartan include:

<li>The ability to annotate web pages and share them with others around you. This works both with a pen and touch device or with a keyboard and mouse.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>A special reading list and reading mode, similar to Apple's Reading List and apps such as Pocket or Instapaper. The reading list feature actually works offline, which is cool.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Built-in PDF support.</li>
</ul>

<li>Cortana support. Again, this is similar to some of the Siri-powered features built-into Spotlight and Safari on iOS and OS X. That said, Microsoft's efforts seem a bit more robust. In addition to working in a Google Now-like manner with helping anticipate events happening soon, it can also work alongside actual web pages and text on a page, rather than simply in a search menu.  </li>

Will this be enough? Microsoft's desktop market share has fallen over the last five years as Google's Chrome browser has become the favorite for desktop machines. Moreover, Chrome also has an advantage of being the default browser on Android, which means that more people use Google's browser on mobile and on the desktop. Meanwhile, an increasing number of web developers no longer view IE compatibility as an important attribute. Developers build sites and apps for WebKit and Blink, the two rendering engines (that are very similar in nature) that power Safari and Chrome on mobile and desktop, first. Mozilla's Firefox often gets tested too and it has been designed to be largely compatible with code prefixes written for WebKit or Blink. Only after the major bases are covered do an increasing number of developers focus on Internet Explorer. For Microsoft, this is a problem.  
 The big challenge Microsoft will face with Project Spartan isn't just whether this new web browser can win over former users who harbor ill-feelings towards IE, but if developers will start to treat Microsoft as a central platform for web development again.

<a href="http://adf.ly/wEFSh" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> StoreDot</a>, the nanotech startup behind the charger, has a new prototype that is smaller and doesn't add bulk to the actual smartphone. During Mashable's demo, the Galaxy S5 battery went from almost empty to 100% in less than two minutes. 
 It almost sounds too good to be true but StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf says it's because the company took a completely different approach when creating its battery. Rather than trying to improve the capacity of the battery itself, the company redesigned the internal structure of the battery so it can charge rapidly. The tradeoff for this speed is the overall battery life is shorter— the battery I saw will last about five hours.

But by cutting charging time down to a minute or two— Mysersdorf says the final product will have a recharge time of well under two minutes— recharging once or twice a day is a nonissue. 
 
"This is not trivial, it took us a lot of research," Mysersdorf said. "This is a design that is trying to achieve something that was not the goal before. Nobody thought about giving you less energy ,everybody thought about giving you more energy." 
 
There are some caveats. The battery is more expensive than typical batteries and Myersdorf anticipates the battery will add about $50 to the total cost of a phone. And though StoreDot has made prototypes that work with handsets currently on the market, smartphone manufacturers will have to make "some modifications" to their devices in order to accommodate the battery. This means it will be up to individual companies to take advantage of the technology. 
 
But on that front, Myersdorf is optimistic. The company is already in early talks with "all the big guys"— the CEO said they have already had more than a dozen meetings with potential partners during CES— and

But the company's vision goes well beyond smartphones. Myersdorf sees a future where all battery-powered devices are use these types of batteries and see electric vehicles as the next big opportunity for the company. 
 
StoreDot starting an an electric vehicles initiative with the goal of creating batteries for cars like Teslas that will recharge in lminutes rather than hours. Myersdorf said a prototype that will recharge a Tesla's battery in three minutes should be ready in about year. 
 
"This a mindset shift," he said. "Everything can be charged faster."
